Not all baths salts are created equal.

Do you know that the vast majority of bath salts in Australia are chemically manufactured?

Most of us have used bath salts in various scents, colours, sizes, and shapes; however, they are not all created equal.

Do you know that the vast majority of bath salts in Australia are chemically manufactured, and salts sourced from the earth's surface go through rigorous mechanical and chemical cleaning processes? Many salts are readily available at supermarkets and pharmacies; however, the origins of many of these salts are not necessarily pure, and many pre-packaged salts will be combined with additives and unnatural scents.

Using a bath salt or soak made of synthetic ingredients can have the opposite of a healing, soothing effect. It can irritate your skin and leave you feeling unsettled and unwell. The primary reason is that many bath salts contain artificial fragrances, one of the most common skin irritants in bath and beauty products. Artificial fragrances can cause eczema, skin irritation, allergies, headaches, and nausea. High-quality bath salts will always use natural essential oils, which have none of the side effects of artificial fragrances but various other benefits.

Natural salts must be cleaned to eliminate all foreign materials and flawed crystals while leaving the raw salt just as untouched as the day it was harvested: no washing, no chemicals, and no tampering. Depending on its natural environment, sea salt inherently contains traces of foreign materials, like sand, shells, rocks, seaweed, or clay. Bath salt can be made from several different types of salt and comes in many grades.

Epsom salts and Himalayan salts are mineral salts and aren't actually salt at all. Epsom salt is a pure mineral compound of magnesium sulfate in crystal form, so it looks an awful lot like salt, but it has no sodium chloride, which is what salt is. Natural Epsom salts are sustainably extracted in Germany and are a completely natural product that is not modified in any way. Importantly, they are free from toxins and heavy metals.

Many brands of Epsom Salt are artificially manufactured in factories and require cleaning using non-natural methods, with the vast majority of Epsom salt in Australia being manufactured in China. If there's an ingredient on your bath salts ingredient list that is particularly long and complicated, there's a good chance that it's a synthetic ingredient and is not something you want to put your body in. The artificial colours and fragrances used in these salts can cause nasty side effects, including rashes, headaches, and hyper-pigmentation. Adding unnecessary items can be detrimental to your health and may even countereffect the benefits of the salt bath itself.

In saying this, not all Himalayan pink salt is created or processed equally. Commodity importers and other suppliers have introduced significantly lower quality Himalayan salt that is poorly processed, often overseas. Poorly processed Himalayan pink salt may contain impurities, insoluble and inedible materials such as metal fragments, pieces of rock or stone, clay particles, dust and powder comprised of finely ground salt and other organic material. These different types of insoluble and undesirable materials require different equipment to identify and separate them from the salt.
